Tap a cell that holds a number and its row, column and every other copy of that number light up in your chosen colour (red in Fig. 1).
Touch any empty slot to select it. The cell and its row, column and 3×3 box are highlighted in your chosen colour (blue in Fig. 2).
Then touch a black cube below the grid to place that number in the selected cell. Copies of that number all over the grid get highlighted too — and a wrong tile flashes red, then disappears, costing a heart.
You start with three hearts on the right of the game screen. Each mistake fades one heart; lose all three and it's GAME OVER — but you can retry the puzzle.
Scoring runs on a multiplier: it starts at x20, drops by 1 every 45 seconds and by 1 more for each hint or lost heart. Every correct tile earns the current multiplier — solve fast and clean.
Stuck on a cell? Tap HINTS (three per puzzle, marked with X's) to fill one stubborn slot for you. The revealed cell glows white with a black number until you select another cube.
Use NOTES to pencil small candidates into a cell while you think, and ERASE to clear a tile you placed wrongly. Each note tap scratches like a pencil, each erase rubs it away.
Fill all 81 slots so every row, column and 3×3 box holds 1-9 once, and the "You solved it!" page shows your time, score and difficulty. No hearts lost, no hints — a perfect game.

Who & When: The Origins. The true origins of Sudoku are a subject of some debate, with roots that stretch back further than you might think.
The Swiss Mathematician (18th Century): The foundational concept of Sudoku is the Latin Square, a grid where a symbol appears only once in each row and column. This concept was studied and popularized by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in the 18th century. Some sources credit him as the earliest creator of the puzzle's underlying principle.
The French Puzzle Setters (19th Century): In the late 1800s, French newspapers began publishing number puzzles that were nearly identical to modern Sudoku. In 1895, the newspaper La France published a puzzle called "le carré magique diabolique" (the diabolical magic square) that simplified the grid to use only numbers 1–9, a key step toward the game we know today.
The American Architect (1970s): The modern, recognizable version of the puzzle was created by Howard Garns, a retired American architect, in 1979. It was first published in the magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games under the name "Number Place".
Where & How: The Journey to "Sudoku"
Japan (1980s): In 1984, the puzzle was introduced to Japan, where it found a perfect home. The Japanese puzzle company Nikoli began publishing it and gave it the name "Sudoku", which is short for a longer Japanese phrase meaning "the digits must remain single". Nikoli also refined the puzzle, reducing the number of starting clues and arranging them in symmetrical patterns to make the game more aesthetically pleasing and elegant.
The Global Boom (2004): For years, Sudoku remained a niche puzzle in Japan. That changed in 2004 when a New Zealand judge named Wayne Gould discovered a Sudoku book in Tokyo. He was so captivated that he wrote a computer program to generate puzzles and pitched the idea to The Times newspaper in London. The Times began publishing daily Sudoku puzzles, and the game's global explosion began almost overnight.
Why It Endures: The simple answer is its perfect balance of simplicity and complexity. The rules are easy enough for a child to understand, yet the puzzles can be incredibly challenging for even the sharpest minds. This timeless appeal ensures Sudoku remains the world's most popular pencil puzzle.
